ECHO-TWIN
Digital Twins, AI and Edge Computing for Cities, the Environment and Infrastructure
ECHO-TWIN, which stands for Edge-Cloud-HPC Optimized Twins based on Workflow-enhanced Inference Networks is a research and innovation programme aimed at developing intelligent ecosystems based on Digital Twins, Artificial Intelligence, federated Data Spaces and distributed Edge-Cloud-HPC computing infrastructures, with applications in mobility, healthcare, the environment and territorial resilience.
The initiative builds on and enhances the investments made by the National Research Centre for High Performance Computing, Big Data and Quantum Computing (ICSC): https://www.supercomputing-icsc.it
It is part of the national policy framework supporting digital transformation and technological innovation in the regions of Southern Italy.
The initiative is supported by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) through the National Research, Innovation and Competitiveness Programme for the Green and Digital Transition 2021–2027 (PN RIC 2021–2027), which includes several lines of action dedicated to industrial research, the strengthening of innovation infrastructures and skills development.
ECHO-TWIN establishes close cooperation between research organisations and businesses to promote the development of innovative solutions in the fields of the environment, mobility, healthcare and smart cities, supporting their testing and adoption in real-world contexts.
To achieve these objectives, the programme is structured around three complementary initiatives:
- ECHO-TWIN-RISE – Research and Innovation for Scalable Edge Computing, dedicated to industrial research and experimental development activities involving Digital Twins, AI and Edge-Cloud-HPC infrastructures;
- ECHO-TWIN-NET – Networking for Excellence and Technology Transfer, focused on strengthening the Innovation Hub, laboratories and technology transfer activities;
- ECHO-TWIN-UP – Upskilling for Progress, aimed at providing advanced training and strengthening the skills of the companies and organisations involved.
A National Innovation Ecosystem
ECHO-TWIN brings together a broad ecosystem of public and private partners that share expertise and infrastructure to address some of the main challenges of the digital transition.
The programme involves universities, public research organisations, national research infrastructures and small and medium-sized enterprises, bringing together outstanding scientific and technological expertise from across Italy, with a particular focus on Southern Italy.
Innovative SMEs and companies such as Parsec 3.26, Net Service, Nurjana Technologies, IOM and Planetek Italia participate alongside academic and research partners including the ICSC Foundation, INFN, INAF and CNR, the University of Naples Federico II (UNINA), the University of Salento (UNISALENTO), the University of Bari Aldo Moro (UNIBA), the University of Calabria (UNICAL), the University of Catania (UNICT), the University of Bologna (UNIBO), the University of Turin (UNITO), the Polytechnic University of Bari (POLIBA) and the Bruno Kessler Foundation (FBK).
The shared objective is to create an integrated network of expertise, laboratories and infrastructures capable of accelerating the testing and adoption of advanced digital technologies across Italy’s territories and strategic sectors.
Parsec 3.26’s Contribution
Parsec 3.26 participates in the ECHO-TWIN-RISE and ECHO-TWIN-NET projects, carrying out activities focused on urban environmental challenges, urban resilience and support for Local Public Administrations.
Within ECHO-TWIN-RISE, Parsec 3.26 is conducting research and experimentation on an intelligent urban monitoring ecosystem based on Urban Digital Twins, data analytics, Edge AI and the integration of territorial and environmental data sources.
These activities are aimed at developing innovative tools to address urban environmental challenges.
Within ECHO-TWIN-NET, Parsec 3.26 is promoting a laboratory dedicated to testing applications in the field of urban environmental challenges.
The laboratory is designed to facilitate technology transfer to public administrations, businesses and local stakeholders, as well as to support the development of experimental applications based on:
- Urban Digital Twins;
- environmental monitoring;
- Edge-Cloud-HPC technologies;
- Artificial Intelligence;
- integrated data platforms;
- digital services for cities.
Innovation for More Resilient Cities
Through ECHO-TWIN, Parsec 3.26 contributes to the development of interoperable and sustainable digital ecosystems that integrate data, technologies and expertise.
These ecosystems are designed to support more effective decision-making in the management of infrastructure, urban environments and the challenges arising from social and environmental change.
